Baha Ritung, a senior scholar at the Department of Health, and an international specialist in the field of sexually transmitted diseases, is the lead author of a study that explores the possible link between the use of Viagra and the risk of erectile dysfunction (ED). The study has been co-funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and by the Department of Veterans Affairs and is supported by the National Institutes of Health and the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
The authors, led by Dr. Shilpa Shindel, an assistant professor at the Department of Health, and an international specialist in the field of sexually transmitted diseases, report a comprehensive analysis of the prevalence and association of erectile dysfunction in the population. They also note that the study is the first to examine the association of the use of Viagra and the risk of ED, in order to draw in new insights from a growing body of research.
“Viagra is not only safe, but also can help men who have ED who are experiencing symptoms of this condition,” Dr. Shilpa said, referring to the association between Viagra use and erectile dysfunction, in their study.
“Viagra is safe and effective in treating erectile dysfunction, but it can also lead to ED when there are other medications being taken. We will continue to examine these other possible associations,” Dr. Shilpa added.
Dr. Shilpa also said that the findings of the study highlight a growing concern that sexual health is associated with an increase in the risk of ED, even after men have taken the drug for years. “Viagra has a long history of use in treating erectile dysfunction. However, the risk of ED increases with age and can last for years to years,” he said. “The researchers’ analysis will be of interest to both men and women, as well as the public as a whole.”
The authors’ analysis of a large sample of Viagra users, using a validated questionnaire, found that 50% reported taking a Viagra pill before starting sexual activity. “This is a significant finding that could potentially help physicians make decisions about erectile dysfunction treatment,” said Dr. Shilpa.
Shilpa noted that the study has several limitations. The participants were aged 18 to 64 years, which is different from some studies of the population, he added. “This study was conducted in a setting where men with ED could potentially have a higher risk of developing the condition,” he said.
“The study shows that sexual activity, including masturbation, can lead to ED. It may also be beneficial to discuss the potential risk of erectile dysfunction in men with erectile dysfunction,” he added. “However, it is not a guarantee of safe and effective treatment, and the data may not be as reliable as we previously thought.”
